Howard Roberts

2nd Trombone

When did you join Littleport Brass?

I believe it was 2016, I was asked to help out in the 2nd section area qualifying competition at Stevenage. Then afterwards as the 2nd trombone seat was vacant I was asked to stay

When did you start playing and on what instrument?

I started to make a horrible noise on a trombone at the age of 11. I played in the school band, then the local music school wind band and then after several years I was asked to join Redbridge Brass. I played in Redbridge Brass for over 20 years but in my mid 30's I put the trombone away and moved from banding to amateur dramatics, getting on stage and doing a bit of song and dance. I moved from London to Manea in 2012 and at a neighbours party I made a passing comment that I used to play trombone. I didn't know that the then secretary of the Manea Band and the principle cornet player were in ear shot, consequently I got hooked into going the Manea Band and the rest is history

Who was your inspiration when you started playing?

It was a long time ago, but I think it was Jimmy Edwards, he was a comedian with a handlebar moustache who 'sort of' played trombone. I'm not as funny as Jimmy Edwards and I definitely can't grow a good moustache but maybe, just maybe, I can play a trombone better than he could

Why do you enjoy playing at Littleport?

Playing in Littleport Brass is a challenge and the music we and the standard that we aspire to has definitely improved my playing

What has been your most enjoyable moment so far with Littleport in terms of music performed, social events, contests or concerts?

For me the Christmas Carol concert in Ely Cathedral is my favourite event. Many years ago I did play at the Royal Albert Hall but I doubt I'll ever get the chance to do that again, playing in Ely Cathedral is a close second

What would you like to achieve with Littleport in the future?

Improve my sight reading and general level of playing

Away from Littleport what else do you like to do?

I also play in the Manea Silver Band where I have been band secretary for over 5 years. I sometimes dip for other bands.

At home I'm always doing DIY, either for myself or my 2 sisters that live close by
